They say you’re never fully dressed without a smile…and I think that’s pretty accurate! Nothing makes a person more attractive and looking full of life than a genuine and heartwarming smile. Think about it….even psychologists suggest smiling when you don’t feel like it, because inevitably you can trick yourself into feeling better. Pretty amazing what one simple movement of your face can do!
That said, I’ve decided to write this blog post thanks to one of my good friends. She recently asked me to remind her what my tooth whitening protocol is. It’s a question I’ve gotten from several people over the years. I guess whatever I’m doing keeps my gnashers looking decent. I mean, smiles are amazing just as they are…but if we can have pearly whites to accompany them….even better!
If you’ve been following me since the inception of this blog, or even if you just kinda know me personally….I’m pretty fanatical about doing things “all natural”. Despite this, it did take me a minute to figure out how I could keep my teeth looking great without the use of harsh chemicals. I made my living in front of the camera for over 15 years, and knew that I wanted to have a competitively white toothed grin. I just couldn’t justify shelling out $100 or more to get my teeth lasered, or anything along those lines, so for a while I opted for white strips and whitening toothpaste.
This worked great, and even though I religiously drank coffee and enjoyed red wine, my teeth were always pleasantly white. I got complimented on them, and that led to me keeping up this strip and toothpaste regimen. What ended up happening is that the enamel on my teeth began to thin a little. Nothing major, but enough to make me stop in my tracks. That, and I knew that fluoride was not the best thing I could be putting in or on any part of my body….so I would have to figure out a completely safe and non toxic way to keep up my smile.
Thanks to the internet, finding safer alternatives was easy. Not as easy as running into the local Target and getting my strips and ultra whitening superpower toothpastes…but worth the little extra time and dollars. I tried many different products, but the ones that really stood out to me where by a company called Uncle Harry’s. They make an amazing tooth powder that not only freshens your breath, and helps keep your gums healthy, but also whitens your teeth gently and effectively. They use ingredients like natural chalk, sea salt, and eucalyptus, clove, wintergreen, and oregano essential oils…nothing but pure ingredients that keep your mouth really happy. Their alkalizing mouthwash adds the perfect finishing touch.
I had already been using Uncle Harry’s Remineralization Liquid to help my son remineralize his teeth (I wrote about that earlier on in this blog…he went from 6 small cavities to none thanks to the protocol I used!)….and knew the products would be effective….I just had no idea that they would work to whiten my teeth as well as the chemical stuff I was using before. Surprise surprise, they worked just as well but without the side effects or nasty ingredients. I’ve since turned my friends in Canada and the UK on to this stuff. It’s just great, and I love that the company is family owned in Washington State. By the way, this post is NOT sponsored. I just love this stuff and want to share it!
One other product I like to use for natural tooth whitening is charcoal toothpaste. I’ve used a couple of brands, and have found them to be equally good. I tend to prefer ones that contain tea tree oil as it’s a natural antibacterial, and always look for fluoride-free varieties. I haven’t tried the charcoal infused toothbrushes yet, but I might in the future and let you know if it makes any difference!
That’s pretty much it! I love that I can maintain a healthy, white toothed smile without any undesirable ingredients or side effects….and without breaking the bank either. I also love that I don’t have to be high maintenance about it….no appointments to make, no drinking my coffee or wine through a straw. I can just relax, and know that I’m using products that keep my mouth healthy and looking its best. One more thing that makes me happy is now that my kids are getting older and wanting to flash whiter smiles….this stuff is perfectly safe for them as well.
