Playing the healthy skin/anti-aging game can be exhausting. There’s no real playbook (although I am gonna try to create one for you) and a million different options…or so it seems!
Like I’ve said in a few of my older blog posts, I never really focused on skincare or anti-aging until I turned 40. Despite working in the fashion and beauty industry for the majority of my life as a young (and not so young) adult I just never obsessed about it nor could I justify spending tons of time and money on my face…..hell, I had student loans to pay off!
…but turning 40 was a game changer…especially living in LA which is basically Never Never Land and every one displays their Peter Pan cards proudly.
Not that I was about to allow myself to become a victim to vanity, but I think most of us want to avoid descending into total Crypt Keeper mode for as long as possible, right?! So I did what I do best….and starting researching.
I’ve already written about some of the great oils, serums, supplements, and products that I use….and I’ll keep writing about others as I discover and implement them into my skincare routine….but today I want to talk about some tools you can use to keep your face in shape! These are all items I keep in my toiletry toolbox and use to keep the old mug tuned up…..so take notes!
JADE ROLLER
I use a jade roller every morning after washing my face and layering on my serums, oils, and moisturizer. Jade rollers are used primarily to improve circulation, and help with lymphatic drainage leaving you with supple, brightened, uncongested skin.
The rolling action is like getting a mini massage on your face which also really helps your skin to better absorb any serums or products you use. If you keep the jade roller in your freezer (which I do!) you also get a great cooling pick-me-up that helps with inflammation and puffiness….hello early mornings!
GUA SHA
I had no idea what this little tool was until I got one free when I bought my jade roller. It just looked like a little slab of jade that I kept on a shelf until I had the time to read up on its benefits. Glad I did!
Like the roller, it helps with increased circulation and lymphatic drainage, but also aids in relieving muscle tension in your face, and boosts skin elasticity. I’ll usually use this every other day in the morning after using my jade roller. This one definitely gives your skin an instant glow!
DERMA ROLLER
Derma rollers are basically little at-home micro needling devices that work very well for improving collagen production, circulation, absorption of serums, and to lessen hyper-pigmentation from sun damage or acne scars. I started off using a basic copper one with no bells and whistles and graduated to a Glo Pro that was gifted to me. The Glo Pro is a game changer!
I use this bad boy 3-4 times a week after washing my face at night and right before using my serums, oils, etc. I started off using very light pressure when I first got it and worked my way up. You don’t want to end up tenderizing your skin like a steak right off the bat! I love that it leaves my skin feeling rejuvenated and plumped up, and it has really helped improve some of the hyper-pigmentation I had due to many years of worshipping the sun with wild abandon.
There are some estheticians and dermatologists that don’t love the idea of people using these micro needling tools at home, but if you’re careful and use them as intended, I think they’re great!
FASCIA BLASTER
Fascia blasters are typically used to reduce cellulite and help with pain issues, however I recently learned that they are great for facial rejuvenation as well! There are some really good expensive ones you can buy, but I opted for a cheapy one to see how and if it would work…..I love it.
I use my little fascia blaster to massage my face in the shower every morning. A few swipes across my forehead and along my jawline and cheekbones. It’s basically a vigorous massage for your face and within a few weeks of starting this I have definitely noticed a marked improvement in my skin integrity…..more awake and lifted. Seems too good to be true (I thought so too) but the proof will be looking right at you in the mirror!
There are great YouTube and IGTV videos available that show different techniques you can use with all of these tools. I watched a few until I found the techniques that worked and felt best for my face (and were the least time consuming….because motherhood).
Now that I’m used to using these tools, I can definitely tell the difference if I skip a couple of days. With prolonged use, all of these will help your skin stay brighter, tighter, and overall healthier….and you won’t run the risk of looking like a reality show housewife! Bonus!
You can check out a few of the tools I use in the Amazon grid below…have fun shopping for your face! 😉
